Beginners classes assume no prior experience at all. They include a warmup, exercises to learn correct technique and the steps are broken down for easy learning, and then a routine where you will get to put the steps together.
Tap dancing tends to be pretty energetic so you should wear comfortable clothing that breaths. Cotton and cotton blends are generally good.
At Isabelle’s Academy of Tap there is no uniform and certainly no dress code. Dress to be comfortable!!! Its not about looking the best in class, its really all about the dancing!
All classes are held at The Dance Factory, 4-10 Yorkshire St, Richmond, 3121 (there’s a map on our Contact Us page)

You don’t have to have tap shoes for your very first lesson. You should feel free to come along and try this dance style before committing to purchasing shoes.
If you don’t have tap shoes for your first lesson, please make sure that you wear a shoe that is enclosed and supportive and preferably without a rubber sole. Rubber tends to stick to the floor and makes your job as a tapper just that much more difficult. Leather soles are the best.
We recommend a leather character shoe with a box toe to support the toes and a firm sole to support the feet. For guys, its pretty straight forward !. Girls, you need to choose between high heels, medium heels, flat, or men’s. Our recommendation would be for a medium heel or flat heel to start off with. High heels just make it that much harder!!!
If you decide to continue on with your tap lessons you do need a proper tap shoe. Isabelle or Megan can advise you where to purchase your shoes.
Will I be in a class with children?
No, these classes are for adults only.
Do I need to pre-enrol?
You don’t need to pre-enrol, you can just turn up and join in, however, it might be best to send us an email or call to let us know you are coming to your first class, just in case there has been a change for some unlikely reason.
How much do classes cost and how do I pay?
There are two payment options for our classes you can either pay by the lesson or you can purchase blocks of 5 or 10 classes up-front. If you would like further information on class fees, feel free to send us an email or give us a call.
Do classes run by the term?
No, because these are adult classes we don’t break for school holidays. Once our classes start for the year they just continue through until early December.
What do I do when I get to the studio?
When you arrive at the Dance Factory just come straight down stairs and ask for either Isabelle or Megan. Tap classes are usually in studio 7 or 8.

Where do I buy my shoes from?
For Tap Shoes we recommend the Salvios brand which you can purchase from Le Pointe Dance Shop in East Brunswick – (03)9387 9628.
Do you have performances? And are they compulsory?
We have one performance at the end of year. Everyone is welcome to participate, but if you don’t feel its for you there is no pressure to take part. Most people seem to and they say it is a fabulous experience.
Performance weekend is usually the first or second weekend in December, and it does take up most of the weekend. All of the routines are taught during normal class hours, there is only one additional rehearsal outside of class hours ahead of the performance weekend.
